Brand values

ZAO Natural Makeup, established in 2012 by nature enthusiasts, offers 100% natural, organic, and vegan-certified cosmetics inspired by Asian bamboo craftsmanship. Their products seamlessly blend beauty with sustainability, using refillable bamboo packaging to reduce waste while delivering high performance comparable to conventional makeup.

ZAO is dedicated to using ethically sourced ingredients, ensuring that their cosmetics are free from synthetic chemicals and cruelty-free. With a focus on environmental and health benefits, ZAO sets a standard for eco-conscious beauty.

Eco Impact

The eye-watering fact about mascara is that around a billion units are sold globally each year, fueling a £10 billion market dominated by some of the world’s biggest makeup brands like Maybelline, L’Oréal, Yves Saint Laurent, MAC, and Lancôme. How many of those offer a refill or low-plastic option? None. Despite their size and influence, these brands continue to rely on plastic-heavy packaging, with little regard for sustainable alternatives.

Switching to a refillable mascara is a small but powerful step toward reducing plastic waste and encouraging sustainability in the beauty industry. By choosing a brand that offers refill options, you can significantly cut down on the number of plastic tubes that end up in landfills each year.

Every refillable mascara you buy helps to shift the demand away from single-use plastics and encourages more brands to embrace eco-friendly practices. It's an empowering choice that not only benefits the planet but also aligns your beauty routine with your values. Making the switch is easy, impactful, and a step toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Why I love this

Natural mascara was one of my earliest eco switches - I found that regular mascaras made my eyes water every time I wore them, so I switched to natural and never looked back! I'll warn you that this isn't waterproof, but it does look great and the refillable nature of it means you can easily keep a couple of different colours and switch them when you want to - I have a black and a brown to easily switch up my look. The bamboo case feels super luxe too, a little treat when I'm applying my makeup.
